Many games that are bough for children are played extensively by adults. In fact, there are many games that are actually aimed at adults and some games have a 21+, or 18 +, age category depending what part of the world the game is being played.

Puzzles always stretch the mind of old and young alike and are as popular throughout the age groups. Marbles solitaire is a game that is a mathematical puzzle that involves 33 holes that are filled by 32 marbles leaving one space spare in the centre. The idea is to capture marbles by jumping over the marbles with a marble and landing into a space.

If the player does it successfully that will end with just one marble left positioned in the centre of the board where the original space was. In order to do this a mathematical is required to understand the principles if the secret of the game is going to be revealed.

A similar type of game is the Rubik’s Cube which after having sold over 350 million copies is regarded as the world’s best-selling toy. It consists of a 3-dimensional cube with the six sides covered in different colors.

An internal pivot mechanism enables each face to move independently so at the start of the game the cube is twisted and turned so that all of the colors are mixed together. The idea is to turn and twist the cube to return the colors to be the same on each of the six sides. The puzzle is challenging and can occupy adults, as well as children for hours.

There are certain board games that adults find irresistible, and one such game is Scrabble. Played on a board consisting of 15 by 15 squares, the players have to create words from the letters they randomly select.

The game is played by the players adding up their scores from the letters they have laid down with different letters having a different value. The rules can change from country to country and some American words are spelt differently to the British versions of them.

Half of all British homes have a scrabble set and there are 20,000 scrabble clubs world-wide. The most commonly contested is the annual Scrabble World Championships. In 2017 the title was won by Australian David Eldar who claimed the 7,500 pounds first prize.

As well as being a top Scrabble competitor, Eldar is a successful professional poker player playing on line, at the same time as playing other card games such as blackjack. He plays under the alias “Deldar 182” and “Pokerbluffs” and has won millions of dollars playing online. It is a complicated game and over the years different theories have been used by the world’s top players’. The world championships are always keenly contested, and during the Cold War in the 1970’s the contests between American Bobby Fischer and Russian Anatoly Karpov were legendary.

Draughts are played on the same size board and each player has 20 pieces and idea is to capture all of their opponent’s men. All the pieces move in the same direction except the kings that can travel backwards. A man becomes a King when it reaches the opponents end of the board. Draughts originated 3000 years ago and there are many variants of the game around the world.

There have been several party games that have been adapted to be played by adults. One of the most popular is Charades. The game first started in France in the 18th century and has now been adapted to be played in many households around the globe.

The players are divided into two teams. A name is written down by one side and then one of their team mimes an action from which the opposing team attempts to guess what they are performing. There are many variables of the game but the common consistent is the “the actor” does not speak.

Charades comes under the genre of “parlour games”. These describes indoor games that were first created in Victorian times to keep people entertained at social gatherings. Many of the games were based on logic and word play and they were often played in the parlor of the house, hence the name.

Today many adults play many of the games found on computers and mobile phones and many of these games are aimed tom attract an adult audience.
